HandsOn Battle Creek works with the desire to be a part of something bigger, the drive for change, the aspiration to make a difference, and turns it into action through volunteering.
The Michigan Student Service Award is a way of recognizing high school graduates who volunteer a significant number of hours to benefit their community though service and volunteerism.
During the course of their four years in high school students must complete and document, through HandsOn Battle Creek, 400 hours of community service and engagement. They also must write a reflection of their experiences explaining how their involvement has impacted their community and their life.
If these requirements are complete, upon graduation from high school students will be awarded a certificate, a medallion to be worn at graduation, and a $500 scholarship to apply toward higher education or training.
HandsOn Battle Creek congratulates the 2010 MSSA recipients:
Jamie Probst of Harper Creek High School
Elizabeth Wilk of Harper Creek High School
Jessica Gerow of St. Philip Catholic Central High School
Karissa Lee of Lakeview High School

The Youth Public Engagement Internship is multifaceted aiming not only to engage youth in the community, but to create a network of agencies, organizations, companies and community members who are dedicated to engaging young people as valued resources in the enhancement of their community. It is an opportunity for youth (age 16-18) to obtain a semester long internship with a partnering site in the nonprofit, for-profit or governmental sector. Upon successful completion of the program, interns will receive a $1,000 scholarship at the conclusion of the semester.
Congratulations to the 2010 Spring Interns for another successful semester!
At the end of every semester, students are required to complete a service project planned and implemented entirely by them. On June 1st, 2010, the Spring Interns completed their service project at Heritage Assisted Living in which they hosted a "Senior Prom". There was music, dancing, laughing, cake & punch, and even a crowned King and Queen! Click on the picture below to view the event.

The Points of Light Youth Leadership Institute is a service-learning program designed to teach youth the importance of community volunteerism and civic engagement. It is a week long program that runs during the summer. Youth will be engaged in both classroom style and experiential learning through the various units in the training. As a part of the training youth will also design and implement a service project in the Battle Creek community.
In 2010, the Points of Light Youth Leadership Institute (PYLI) will take place during the week of July 19th through the 23rd. The service project, planned and implemented by the participants, will take place on the final day (the 23rd of July) with a special celebration to honor the partipant's achievements on the following Monday.
